There are many reasons why the famine occurred in Zambia. It was partly caused by lack of rainfall but there are also large numbers of people suffering from HIV/AIDS in Zambia. This means many people are too sick to tend the fields. The remoteness of many areas meant that food could not be delivered to help those who were starving. This meant that farmers, like Mombeko, had no seeds to plant and their fields had become wasteland.
