About this resource

Ciudadanos del Mundo: Oscar Romero is SCIAF’s new global citizenship resource for Religious Education and Modern Languages.

Archbishop Oscar Romero was an outspoken defender of the poor in El Salvador and was assassinated while saying mass in San Salvador on the 24th March 1980. His life and teachings have had a profound impact on people and communities in El Salvador and all around the world. He was a real champion of the poor and oppressed, and SCIAF has taken great inspiration and motivation in our work from the example he set.

The new resource has been designed to bring the Spanish language to life, whilst helping people learn more about global citizenship, life in El Salvador, and the work of SCIAF.

Aims of this resource:

• To celebrate the life of Oscar Romero by learning about his motivations, life, death, and continuing inspiration for people around the world.
• To explore global citizenship and develop a deeper understanding of our responsibility for our brothers and sisters around the world.
• To raise awareness about life in El Salvador and help pupils better understand SCIAF’s work.
• To help young people understand the importance of language and communication in our globalised world and encourage them to learn Spanish
• To support the implementation of A Curriculum for Excellence guidelines for RE and Modern Languages.

The online video wall

The video wall includes four videos which have been produced in different formats(English subtitles, Spanish subtitles, un-subtitled, and a glossary version):

(i) Introduction by SCIAF’s Clea Ferguson
(ii) Voice of the voiceless: Oscar Romero’s life;
(iii) Interview with young people in El Salvador;
(iv) Erasmo Valiente, who works for a partner of SCIAF in El Salvador.
