SCIAF's work in Zambia
In 2002, there was a severe famine in southern Africa. Up to 38 million people were affected by severe shortages of food. SCIAF responded by launching an emergency appeal which raised £370,000 from the Scottish public. The UK Government also gave £425,000 to SCIAF respond to the emergency. This was sent to Zambia which was one of the countries hardest hit. SCIAF gave out emergency food supplies to help people survive in the short term. Through the work of our local partner organisations, we also provided training to farmers so they would be able to grow enough food even during the worst droughts. This work has been very successful with some farmers growing five times more food than they did before. SCIAF’s work in Zambia shows that hunger and famine don’t have to happen.
