Holyrood RC Secondary (Glasgow) – fasting for change

Each year during Lent, Holyrood Secondary in Glasgow pulls out all the stops to support SCIAF. Miss O'Reilly from the schools Pastoral/Chaplaincy committee reports here on what happened this year.

“As has been tradition in our school for a good number of years we ran the SCIAF 24 Hour Sponsored Fast. On Friday 25th March many of our pupils and staff arrived to school without breakfast having started their ‘Fast’ the evening before.

At lunchtime we listened to some live music to distract us from our hunger pangs. This year it was our 6th Year Music Performance Group who delighted us with their vocal and musical talents as we sipped on our cups of water ! Some eager 6th year pupils wearing ’24 Hour Fast T-Shirts’ helped collect donations from around , especially those not fasting.

There was a great atmosphere on the day knowing we were joining in spirit too with the many people throughout the world who feel hunger pangs every day as they struggle to survive. Although many pupils and staff found the last two hours of their fast difficult they persevered in solidarity with the people of Haiti to help raise an amazingly generous total of £6300.

We were encouraged by the visit of John Sharp from SCIAF to collect the cheque from some of the pupils who excelled themselves in their efforts including 6th pupil Michael Mullaney who raised over £300 and has consistently raised large amounts over the years. Also 1st year pupils Megan Martin and Erin Heath their first time joining the ’24 Hr Fast’ who both raised over £100 each.”

Well done to everyone at Holyrood!!!
