St Andrew's High, Kirkcaldy have a lot to be proud of. This year they raised an outstanding £5225 for SCIAF bringing the total raised in the last 10 years to £37,357.
But raising money is only one of the things the school has excelled at: St Andrew's High pupils (Andrew McFarlane, Patrick Penman, Kelly Fox, Andrew Maloney, Louise Harkins) have been awarded SCIAF's Global Citizenship Award for their outstanding contribution to promoting Fairtrade in session 2005-6. The team were part of the school's Fairtrade Action Group which helped to set up a permanent fairtrade shop within the school, selling products from Traidcraft, FairDeal Footballs and Pachamama (silver). This shop has been doing excellent trade (with a turnover since February of nearly £2000). In addition to this, they ran a Fairtrade cafe during Fairtrade Fortnight and spoke to year groups. The committee, together with these key pupil members, worked with the Home Economics Department (Fairtrade cookie-making with S1), with the English Department (poster competition) and the RE Department (education and promotion), to get the message of Fairtrade across to the whole community.
The work and dedication of this group has been outstanding. With the help of these pupils the school is now well on its way of achieving its aim of becoming a Fairtrade school.
