There's plenty of different ways to fast so everyone, young or old, can take part.
24-hour fast
As it says on the tin - a 24-hour fast means you don't eat for a whole day! SCIAF's FAST happens at the start of Lent each year - you need to be over 12 yrs to take part. Order your materials and T-shirt from SCIAF. We'll also give you advice on how best to do the fast.
Option for S5/6 pupils
Start the fast on a Friday morning after breakfast. Organise a fast-sleepover in your local church hall on a Friday evening to help everyone make it through the night. Organise fun activities, simulation games and reflections on world hunger to make the event meaningful and help keep tummy rumbles at bay! Finish the fast with a communal breakfast next morning.
Options for younger children:
• Get a group of teachers to do the 24-hour fast and ask pupils to sponsor them
• Organise a "fa" or "st" - that's half a fast over 12 hours
• If pupils can't manage a full fast, why not suggest they skip-a-meal and give the money they've saved to SCIAF
Slam Dunk the Junk
Lock up the tuck-shop and vending machines and encourage pupils to give up sweets and crisps for a day. Ask them to get sponsored and donate the money that they would have spent on sweets to SCIAF.
Arrange for a room or hall in the school to be made available over lunchtime. Invite pupils to attend. Provide water and a simple meal of plain bread or boiled rice. Organise a simple prayer reflection to finish. Money saved on lunch can be donated to SCIAF.
Rich/poor meals
You need to get your canteen staff on board for this. Sell tickets for the lunch. A lucky few will have lunch fit for royalty while the majority have to make do with a simple meal of bread or rice.
