G8 Report Card

It wasn’t just school children who got a report card before breaking up for the summer holidays.

We wrote a special report grading the leaders of the G8 (the world’s eight richest countries) on how well they have worked together to help tackle global poverty.

And although they have shown some promise, we think that they could definitely do better.

In 2005 the G8 leaders met in the Scottish town of Gleneagles to talk about what they could do to help poorer countries reduce poverty, hunger and disease.

They promised to double the amount of aid money set aside for Africa, introduce fairer trade rules for poor countries and cancel the crippling debts that those poor countries owe to the rich G8.

Here’s how we scored them on their work over the last five years:

Aid: C
Debt: C-
Trade: F

Here at SCIAF, we take the fight against global poverty very seriously and as you can see, the G8 countries still have a long way to go.
